In a solar sensor, we want to integrate a tiny piece of semiconductor with optics and electronics. And solid electrical connectors. And of course good shielding from electromagnetic interference. And special features for mounting and adjustment. And much more. That's why we manufacture the main body of our sensors from a solid piece of aluminium with high-speed CNC-machining. This provides the possibility to integrate all the functionality we want at the place we want. And it gives you a rock-solid sensor, ready for everything.



Finest Analog Circuits

Sensors for solar power systems operate in an environment with power lines, transformers, and other sources of electromagnetic interference. We want our sensors even with sub-microampere currents to perform flawlessly in such an environment. And we want them to deliver accurate measurement results even when the temperature changes constantly. That is why we developed our own research-grade signal amplification technology. Each component for these circuits has been specifically chosen with the demanding environment in mind that the sensor will face.

Black is really Black

In a solar sensor, the sunlight should illuminate the detector. Nothing else. All reflections should be be avoided to minimize stray light and backscattering with unknown spectral composition. To achieve this, a well-designed optical path with baffles at the right places is needed. And black surfaces that can absorb the light along the entire solar spectrum. Most of the coatings for aluminium are only black in the visible range. At Black Photon Instruments, we developed a black plasma coating for critical components which is really black, from the UV to the far infrared.



Packaging Technology

Solar sensors operate in harsh environments with heat, rain, ice, and sometimes even some salty ocean breeze. To protect the detector and the measurement electronics, we designed our sensor housings with the most advanced sealing technologies available. For all sensors relying on radiometric measurements (e.g. Isotype sensors), the detector chip is mounted in a nitrogen filled enclosure made only of steel and glass with ceramic feed-throughs for the electrical signals.





System Integration

A good sensor is more than an assembly of components. At Black Photon Instruments, we make sure in long hours of design work and countless tests that all details of the sensor system fit together: The optical imaging with the mechanical tolerances, the thermal expansion of the materials with their flexibility, the design ideas with the manufacturing processes,and the features of the sensors with tight budgets.
